Young children experience big emotions every day—happiness, excitement, frustration, sadness, fear, and anger. Because they are still learning to understand these feelings, they often express them through tears, tantrums, or silence.

The good news is that stories and music are wonderful tools to help children recognize, express, and manage their emotions in a safe and gentle way.

📖 Why Stories Help

When children listen to stories, they see characters facing emotions just like their own. This helps them understand that every feeling is normal and that difficult emotions can be managed with love, patience, and support.

After reading a story, ask simple questions like:

  • How do you think the character felt?

  • Have you ever felt the same way?

  • What could we do to help someone who feels like that?

These conversations build emotional awareness and strengthen your child's communication skills.

🎵 Why Music Helps

Music naturally calms the mind and helps children regulate their emotions. Soft songs before bedtime, cheerful action songs during playtime, or calming instrumental music during quiet moments can help children feel safe and relaxed.

Try singing together instead of simply playing music. Your voice gives your child comfort and creates lasting memories.

🎨 Weekend Activity: My Feelings Wheel

Help your child understand and express their emotions with this simple Feelings Wheel activity. It's a fun way to start conversations about emotions and build emotional confidence.

🛠️ You'll Need

  • Cardboard or a paper plate

  • 6 coloured paper circles

  • Sketch pens or markers

  • Scissors

  • Paper fastener (split pin) or paper clip

  • Glue

✂️ How to Make It

  1. Cut a large circle from cardboard or use a paper plate.

  2. Paste six coloured circles around the board.

  3. Draw different emotion faces:

    • 😊 Happy

    • 😢 Sad

    • 😡 Angry

    • 😨 Scared

    • 😲 Surprised

    • 😌 Calm

  4. Cut an arrow from cardboard and attach it to the centre using a split pin so it can spin.

  5. Decorate your Feelings Wheel with stickers or drawings.

💬 Talk Together

Ask your child:"How are you feeling today?"

Let them turn the arrow to the emotion that matches their feelings.

Then ask:

  • What made you feel this way?

  • What can help you feel better?

  • Would you like a hug, a story, or some music?

Remember, there are no right or wrong feelings—every emotion is okay. Talking about feelings helps children understand themselves and builds confidence.

🐝 Wiggles Wisdom

Children don't need perfect parents—they need parents who listen, understand, and help them feel safe.

Every conversation, every story, and every song is an opportunity to help your little one grow into a confident, kind, and emotionally strong individual.

This week's family challenge: Read one bedtime story and sing one favourite song together every day. Watch how these small moments create a big difference.
